CHAIRMAN’S INTRODUCTION

The first Strategic Plan of the Fundació, started in 2005, has finished in 2008. It has been a boost to a new organization of the Fundació, which is now more professional, giving priority to certain healthcare and research lines and decisively opting for quality.

During this period the number of patients visited in our Unit has increased a 20 per cent. We should reflect on this growth: Why is it happening? Does prevention work? Is it a consequence of laxity in risk perception? Or is it, simply, an emergence of new cases that had not been diagnosed previously? In any case, we have to seriously think about the ability pf our Health system to face a growth like this.

From the Fundació there has been a response to this situation in the health-care field, also adapting our service to the illness new needs. We have consolidated programs like the treatment of facial lipoatrophy and the co infection by the hepatitis or human papilloma viruses.

On research, the establishment of lines has allowed us to double the number of our own publications, and at the same time there has been an increase in independet studies we directly sponsor. This would not have been possible without the creation of our own CRO, an organization responsible for the studies' clerical work, and for auditing its reliability and quality.

Teaching, the third activity performed by the Fundació, has focused in training specialists in our own center: the number of doctoral theses read has multiplied. We also teach outside, offering courses specialized in HIV, and promoting meetings with international experts in small groups to make the most of the training.

We should specially remark the implementation pf the ISO 9001-2000 Quality Certification in all our activities. It has decisively contributed to our efficacy and has permitted setting up of indicators to constantly identify our improvement possibilities.

The Fundació has also invest resources to fight against the stigma that still exists nowadays around HIV. The "Stand Up to AIDS" campaign is a compromise to make this infection visible, to fight against discrimination and to defend social acceptance of the disease. We have carried out lots of communication actions under this slogan but the most important appears to be the World AIDS Day concert, on December 1st. In 2008, Miguel Bosé, a well-known artist, "stood up" in the wonderful "Palau de la Música Catalana". It was an unforgettable evening. Our wish is that, day by day, more and more people will join us in our purpose nd will dedicate their efforts to "stand up" too.

You can already read our second Strategic Plan (2008-2011) in this website or in our activity report. You will see that it strengthens the existing lines and incorporates a new one: starting projects in developing countries. We think this is also our responsibility.
